Obligatory fan poll.
I choose the first game because it was the original, had the most memorable bosses IMO and of course it introduced the fandom to us.
Devil May Cry 3 Dante's Awakening is a close second but with the exception of Vergil the boss fights didn't feel as memorable to me.

Devil May Cry 4 was the first DMC that I owned and was able to play through completely so I was pretty much raised on Nero. It was my first so it's my favorite, also the Devil Bringer provided me with hours of entertainment.

I vote on three - it instilled life into the series that wasn't present before. If DMC introduced the fanbase, DMC3 easily tripled it with it's smart storytelling, amazing gameplay and crazy cinematic goodness. If anybody disagrees that Vergil may very well have a bigger fanbase than even Dante... they need to get a brain check.

It was a factor that included him in the Special edition but not entirely true ;D
Actually the re-release of the game was made to correct the difficulty, which was way too hardcore for gamers appearently as our normal mode was the equivalent of the japanese hard mode. Complete with a new checkpoint system (because the one in the original DMC3 was broken) and new features it was really the superior edition of the game by all means.
Plus we got to play as Nelo Angelo!!!

I also voted on number three. Because I was always interested in Dante's brother and when I got to see how much of a monster he was in three...it made my life happy.

Devil May Cry 3 had the better story telling out of all of them, so I chose that.

Devil May Cry 2.
This game had the best artwork, the best supporting character (Lucia) and the best Dante. Instead of acting like a loud obnoxious asshole I wanted to stab repeatedly in the face with a knife (like in Devil May Cry 3) he take things seriously and acts how I think a man in his profession should act. He was more likable in this game than the others, now I could tolerate him in 1. He wasn't that bad at all in 1. But in 3 and 4 I couldn't stand him and wanted him to die.
I can't get behind a game when the main character you're playing as is annoying as all hell. Had the series started off with 3 as 1 I would have never been interested in it. Best part of Devil May Cry 3 was when he gets his ass whipped by Vergil. Best thing they did with 3 was add Vergil as a playable character in the special edition.
I hear many fans want to disown Devil May Cry 2 altogether but I say if you do that then you should disown 4 too. They always hate on 2 but I hear nothing about 4 from them. 4 was far worse than 2. At least the other playable character in 2 was her own character. Nero was basically a cardboard cutout of Dante where his balls dropped off. They made Lady into nothing but eye-candy and that story was all over the place. Devil May Cry 2 story may have been lacking but at least it made sense!
Let's not forget Devil May Cry 2 had the most badass Dante moment of the series.
*Awaits fanboy hate for liking 2*

I didn't care much for Devil May Cry 2 gameplay.

2 and 4 were arguibly the worst DMC games, each for their own reasons. 4 takes the cake for being the most damaging to the franchise however, with a story that fucked-over the general continuity royally.
I'll agree with 2 having the best character design out of all the games. Dante never looked as good or badass as he did in 2 and Lucia was enigmatic and an interesting character concept. Even the bad guy looked like a guy out of Tekken (which isn't a bad thing). Despair embodied was also a REALLY cool-looking final boss. In terms of level and enemy design however, the first game is the best by a long-shot. Mallet island was amazing to explore and the scenery was sometimes breath-taking - even now 10 years after it came out.
2 also introduced the series to many of it's signature moves, like rainstorm and the trickster moves (which 4 actually took out, speaking of which). Gameplay wise it wasn't on par with the others though - the controls were slow and the combat didn't feel nearly as satisfying as it was in the first game. In general it felt rushed and unpolished, which is a shame because given a rehaul of the combat and a bit more development on the story it could have actually been quite good.
4 is damaged... plain and simple. They went with all the worst design choices for the characters by making Nero everything but a breath of fresh-air in the series. He's DMC3 Dante with DMC1's equivalent of a move-set and a broken spammable style; the Devil-Bringer. On that topic, the entire game is focused around that stupid arm and by the end of the final credits we are all still scratching our heads at the origins of said arm and the main protagonist. Gameplay wise it was a carbon copy of the third game, and ended up being actually less in-depth than it's predecessor in terms of individual styles. The repetitive level design and boss-rehash, on the other hand, was just pure fucking lazyness on the dev's part.
If 2 didn't live up to expectations, 4 crushed them... and I don't mean it in a good way.
